Abstract

Purpose: The objective of this study is to review the histry of the welfare services for the elderly in Chosun
Dynasty
Method: Through the annals of Chosun Dynasty which comprise 1,893 books covering 472 years(1392-1863) of the history of Chosun Dynasty, from the reign of the King Taejo, to the end of the reign of the King Cheoljong. The data were collected by searching for the words ¡¯gyuhyul¡¯ ¡¯jinhyul¡¯ ¡¯hyeyang¡¯. Among them, the data concerned with the elderly were analyzed
Results: According to the suppliers of the services, the welfare services were classified into 3 levels : the government, the province, and the village. 1)The government provided food, clothes, suit materials, rice, liquor, meat and so on. The criminals were prisoned to the jail near the houses of their old parents. Compulsory labors wereduced for over 60 year-old people. Giroso were organized for high ranking government officials. 2) The province held the ¡¯yangroyeun¡¯ for elderly of 60 years old over. And the Village provided the Hyang-Ak and ¡¯Kye¡¯
Conclusion: The Welfare system of Chosun dynasty was neither organized nor systemic. It was carried out in the
form of charity or poor-relief measure and work, mainly for the purpose of kindhearted, moral or imperial politics.
